Pūpū Kala (Silver Shell)

Walking along Anini Beach, I see a powerful wave striking the reef at Kalihiwai. A tower of water, with its mouth gaping like a lion, and a roar that shakes your very soul – shells are strewn along the shoreline shimmering in the sunlight and my eye catches a long and beautiful silver shell.
I put it to my ear and hear the sounds of wind and waves caressing the island flora, and can see its beauty glimmer with aloha. Another wave comes and explodes on the reef as a surfer drops in and tames the roaring beast. With a rhythm and song, she glides through the barrel and gets shot out onto the shoulder.

She smiles from ear to ear as she cuts back for more. This is the song and dance of Pūpū Kala.
