A successful Big Island wood-hunt… . 1) scrap ko

A successful Big Island wood-hunt…

1) scrap koa micro-curl for a vintage repair (couldn’t find the right piece to match). Now I’ve got no excuse. Should be a fun repair. Also scrap, just enough for a tenor top and back (I’ve got sides)
.
2)Figured monkey pod. (I’ve been looking for about eight years)
.
3) Figured Mango. More like a quilt pattern.
.
4) Figured Ohia. This one is the prize! Mostly cut “flat-sawn” , and too small for instruments, but this tree was old and BIG! They had two slabs (right and Left of the center cut) vertical grain, slight run-off at the upper end. Could only get this last piece as the rest was sold for a high end table build.
.
The lumber will now rest and slow dry. Stckered in San Diego it should dry in a few months. Then it will be milled here on our farm at the #menehuneworkshop .

This morning. Watching the coastline magically disappear.

You hear the complaints of the tourists, “Where’s the sun?” “I came here for the sun!” “Why’s it so wet here?!”

Local answer…
“Hilo das why”…
.
I love the rain here. At home in San Diego, rain and wind are cold and forbidding. An uncomfortable, inconvenient obstacle. Here in Hilo, it’s a beautiful, warm, shower. It’s welcome. It’s why it is so green. Of course it can be forbidding, but most of the time it’s just rain.😁
